Last week’s storm was the region’s first serious test of this year’s DANA season. Close to 100 liters per square meter fell in under an hour, flooding streets and trapping commuters in their vehicles. Water rushed into metro stations and even forced a stadium to be evacuated during a football match. Autumn is when cold air off the jet stream collides with a warm Mediterranean, exposing Valencia to sudden, violent rain. So, this week’s episode is unlikely to be the last before winter.

The storm also reopened questions about the alert system itself. Levante-EMV reported criticism that AEMET’s warning came too late relative to the rainfall, and Las Provincias gathered the questions residents and officials are still asking about the emergency response, nearly two years after the region’s deadliest DANA. By Friday, the Consell had formally asked Madrid to lower the rainfall threshold that triggers a flood alert here — currently, officials say, the highest bar of any Spanish region. Eighteen reservoirs under national authority in the Comunitat still have no emergency plan in place for heavy-rain scenarios, according to regional officials.

Meanwhile, the judge overseeing the investigation into the October 2024 DANA, which killed 232 people, has extended the inquiry to April 2027 — a week before the region’s next election campaign formally begins — citing the case’s scale and complexity.

Valencia’s mayor, María José Catalá, kicked off her re-election bid with a ten-hour marathon debate covering housing, tourism and security, unveiling more than a hundred proposals for a second term. In Alicante, PSPV’s Diana Morant — one of the party’s leading contenders to head its Generalitat ticket — rallied supporters over the weekend, framing next June’s vote as a chance to reverse laws she called regressive on gender.

Valencia’s economic ties to China kept deepening this week. Ford named thirty-year company veteran Jeff Jones to lead its new joint venture with Chinese automaker Geely at the Almussafes plant, where he’ll relocate to oversee production of five vehicle models starting in 2027. Valencian officials also met Geely executives in Hangzhou, where the manufacturer plans to sell more than six million vehicles worldwide by 2030, and toured UPV’s new Hangzhou campus — the university’s first in China, currently home to around 5,000 students with a target of 10,000 by 2030.

Valencia’s foreign workforce hit a new record in August, with seven in ten new workers now arriving from outside the EU, according to Social Security data reported by Valencia Plaza. The trend echoes the experience of Rami Ahmadi, an Iranian-American doctor profiled by Levante-EMV this week, who spent four years navigating Spain’s credential-recognition process before finally being cleared to practise medicine at a public health centre in Benifaió. She has since founded Homologación Justa Ya, a group pushing to make it easier for skilled migrants to get their qualifications recognised.

Residents of Cabanyal and Malvarrosa are raising the alarm over a resurgence of heavy drug use along the beachfront, with locals telling Levante-EMV that discarded syringes have been turning up between Patacona and Malvarrosa beach — echoing the city’s notorious 1990s Ruta del Bakalao scene.
Separately, police in San Isidro arrested a young Russian man after a ten-day manhunt, closing out the search for a suspect accused of killing his stepfather; he was recognised and reported by a member of the public.

Las Provincias returned to L’Alqueria, a neighbourhood in Alzira with a long history of feuding families, after a dispute between two young granddaughters escalated into a gunfight that killed their grandfather as he tried to intervene. Reporters found fighting roosters and wary residents in an area police describe as a hotbed of illegal activity, with tension between rival clans running back decades.

In the Sierra de Espadán, south of Castellón, the world’s only producer of organic-certified wine corks is facing a long recovery after this summer’s wildfires scorched much of its cork-oak forest. The company estimates the bark will take up to 45 years to regrow enough to harvest again, forcing it to prune damaged trees and start new stock in the meantime.
