Bon dia! The teacher’s strike is set to continue this week as government negotiators have yet to reach an agreement with unions – just in time to join the resumed Metrovalencia strikes. Meanwhile, the City Council has unveiled their vision of what Valencia’s much anticipated Central Station will look like. And on Monday, a mascletà is set to celebrate the King Jaume I Awards.

Teacher’s strike continues – as university entrance exams get underway
The government’s latest offer to raise teacher salaries and reduce class sizes has been roundly rejected by members of the teacher’s unions. 91% rejected the proposal and 80% voted to continue the strike, now in it’s fourth week. The latest proposal offered an incremental increase of €200 a month plus a reduction of class sizes, but there are still stumbling blocks to a full agreement. Meanwhile, graduating students are sitting down to entrance exams. Though the unions have provided for staffing the exams, the debate has heightened tensions in schools. In a sign of public support, however, the strike fund has raised more than €150 thousand.
Protesters demand justice for DANA flood victims
Hundreds gathered over the weekend to demand former Generalitat President Carlos Mazon be tried in court for his management of the deadly 2024 floods. The protest has happened every month since November 2024 on the 29th to mark the day of the flooding. It is Valencia’s longest-running political protest.

Small businesses pressured by rising rents
Rising rents for commercial property and a lack of available space is making it difficult for small and family-run businesses to survive in the city, a new study finds. In particular, Valencia Plaza cites the increase in tourist apartments, particularly those converting ground floor commercial space into short term residence, as one of the main drivers. A commercial rental of 80 sqm now costs between €900 to €1800, as much as 40% of operating costs.
Costco is coming to Valencia
The rumors are true: The American retail giant has signed a deal to build a warehouse center in Paterna. Despite years of rumors of a Costco in the area, this is the first concrete sign that the American wholesale chain will be opening up in Valencia. Currently, the nearest Costco is in Zaragoza.

A vision for an iconic Valencia Central Station
Las Provincias gives readers a glimpse into the future of Valencia Central Station – the mega project that will become the city’s main rail terminus. The images Las Provincias obtained show a soaring open-air structure where commuters can walk through the green trees of Parque Central to catch their trains. Several underground levels for the planned high-speed Mediterranean Corridor will be accessed from the north and south – what are currently Estación del Norte and Estación Joaquin Sorrolla.

Metrovalencia strike set to continue in June
In addition to public school teachers, Metrovalencia workers are also due to continue their intermittent strike this month. On certain dates in June, services will be reduced during non-peak hours. Levante-EMV has a summary of the affected days.

Monday Mascletà to honor Spanish innovation
Plaza Ayuntamiento will stage an evening maslcetà at 8 pm on Monday in honor of the King Jaume I Awards. These annual awards held in Valencia celebrate the best in Spanish entrepreneurship and scientifc innovation. The jury, composed of several nobel laureates and King Felipe, deliberates the submissions in June and the awards are presented in November.
Corpus Christi turns 700 in Valencia
This Thurday is the start of Corpus Christi festival, the city’s oldest festival and one of its most fun. Mysterious dances, a giant water fight, and huge “monstrosities” wheeled into the streets. Pont de Valencia’s Mireille Morejon has more on the unique celebrations that will take place in the historic city center this weekend.
