Valencia in August: The Slow Season Guide

This is a special edition — Pont de València is taking its summer break for August, so before we go, here’s a preview of what’s on around the city (and a bit beyond it) for the whole month.
August is Valencia’s quiet season: the first two weeks still have things going on, but many shops and cultural spaces shutter for the back half before the city wakes back up in September.
Festivals & Holidays
Total Solar Eclipse — Wednesday, August 12, totality ~20:32–20:33. Eclipse begins at 19:38 but the final totality lasts about a minute. Because it’s so close to sunset you’ll want a clear view of the western horizon. Malvarrosa Beach has accessible parking and wheelchair access but getting a clear view may be difficult. Las Corregudes de Joies — August 10–14 (races Aug 11–14, from 18:00h), Platja de Pinedo, free. Bareback beach horse races over 180 years old. Riders compete without saddles for the “joia,” a silk sash tied to a laurel crown. Pinedo is the last town in the region still keeping the custom alive. Visit Valencia — event info
Día de la Dansa Tradicional Valenciana — Sunday, August 2, 19:30h, Plaza de la Reina, free. An evening of traditional Valencian folk dance — jotas, fandangos, boleros and albaes — organised by the region’s folklore federation. Visit Valencia — event info
Circ Voramar — August 28–September 6, Poblats Marítims (Tinglado 2 + streets), free. 11th edition: 25 free circus and street-theatre shows across the maritime neighborhoods. Circ Voramar — official site
Film & Screen
Outdoor screenings are the one thing that keeps going strong through August. Many of the screenings are free or at reasonable ticket prices.

Live Music
Most of the big summer festivals move out of town in August (see Out of Town below), but a few things remain in the city:
- FAR Music Festival closes its lineup this Thursday and Friday, featuring the Gypsy Kings and Marta Santos. Info
- Roig Arena hosts a heavy metal night: Judas Priest, Airbourne, and Udo Dirkschneider. Roig Arena — tickets
- 16 Toneladas — local favourites Helen, Helen play original rock-punk-country hybrid on Friday. 16 toneladas program
- Loco Club — British R&B act PM Watson and Americana group Ryan Davis and the Roadhouse Band. Loco Club website
- La Vitti stays open all August with a mixed singer-songwriter/jazz lineup — and air conditioning. Check their Instagram for the full schedule.
- Burning House (Cabanyal) has a few jazz sessions early in the month — follow their Instagram for last-minute updates.
Visual Art & Exhibitions
Many museums stay open through August with reduced hours — check individual websites for times. Here’s a quick roundup of the ongoing exhibitions:
- IVAM: Tania Candiani’s Radix (immersive underground-ecosystem installation), Cristina de Middel’s Apoteosis Now (252 photographs), plus La Albufera, Te llamo cuerpo, and La mujer en la obra de Julio González. IVAM website

- Fundación Bancaja: Tàpies: Última década, through August 30 — the artist’s final decade of work (2002–2012) — plus the ongoing De Miró a Barceló, a 60-artist survey spanning Picasso, Kandinsky, Miró, Chillida, Barceló and Manolo Valdés. Fundación Bancaja website
- Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero (CAHH): Anselm Kiefer’s first major Spanish solo show, across six purpose-built rooms in the Palacio de Valeriola. Free Wednesday afternoons (reservation required). CAHH website
- Bombas Gens: La Leyenda del Titanic, through August 16 — a 90-minute immersive experience combining 360° video mapping, VR and original objects. Bombas Gens website
- Museo de Bellas Artes: Rubens: El florecimiento de un genio, tracing Rubens’ formative and Italian years with loans from the Prado, the Albertina (Vienna) and the Ducal Palace of Mantua. Bellas Artes website

Concerts & Festivals
- Medusa Sunbeach Festival — August 13–17, Cullera beach, from €97 (4-day pass). One of Europe’s biggest electronic festivals, drawing well over 100,000 across eight stages.
- Festival Mediterránea — August 13–15, Parc Ausiàs March, Gandía, from €71. Indie/pop-rock, with Love of Lesbian’s farewell tour headlining alongside La M.O.D.A., Miss Caffeina, Siloé and more.
Traditions & Fiestas
- Fiestas de Sant Roc, Burjassot — August 1–16 (~10 min away). Concerts, processions, fireworks. Free shows from Carlos Baute (Aug 12) and Maldita Nerea (Aug 13); fireworks close it out on the 16th.
- Viver Wine Fest — Friday, August 7, 20:30–00:00, Parque La Floresta, Viver (Alto Palancia). Ticketed, open bar of wine and tapas, live music. Shuttle from Valencia available (~€22).
- Onda Medieval — August 7–9, evenings from 18:00h, Castillo de Onda, Castellón (~1h). Free medieval market with jousting, parades, puppet theatre and a torch-lit procession. Very visual, easy for non-Spanish speakers.
- Sagunt a Escena — August 1–23, Teatro Romano de Sagunto + street venues (~35 min). 43rd edition of theatre, music, dance and circus. The theatre programme runs mostly in Valencian/Spanish, but the free street-level “Off Romà” strand (circus, clown, large-format street theatre) is language-free.
- Fiesta de la Vendimia & Ferevín, Requena — August 19–30 (Ferevín wine fair Aug 22–23), ~50 min by train. Spain’s oldest grape-harvest festival, marking its 77th edition, with grape-treading, cellar visits, parades and a wine fair — especially relevant this year, as Requena holds the Ciudad Española del Vino (Spanish Wine Capital) 2026 title.
- La Tomatina — Wednesday, August 26, 12:00–13:00, Buñol (~40 min), ~€15, tickets mandatory, capped at 20,000. The world’s biggest food fight — one hour, roughly 150,000kg of tomatoes. Worth including for the practicalities: tickets sell out and most visitors base themselves in Valencia and travel out for the day.
- La Cordà de Paterna — night of Sunday, August 30, ~01:30h, Carrer Major, Paterna. Around 70,000 firecrackers set off in 20–25 minutes down the main street, closing Paterna’s Fiestas Mayores — a declared Fiesta of Tourist Interest and intangible cultural heritage.
