Fires from Castellón to the city’s edge
The blaze in Vall d’Uixó, near Castellón, has burned around 6,500 hectares and forced more than 16,000 residents to evacuate. Firefighters say the fire is contained, though it remains active. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to visit the affected area on Monday. Las Provincias is running a daily interactive map tracking hectares burned across the region.

Fire has reached closer to home too. A blaze broke out in fields near the Oceanogràfic, sending a large plume of smoke over the city before firefighters brought it under control. Near the Bonaire shopping centre in Manises, another fire in the scrubland forced evacuations. An elderly man who had gone to tend an agricultural plot in the area was unable to escape and was killed.

The fires here are part of a wider national emergency. Near Ávila and Toledo, what is now the biggest wildfire in Spanish history has burned more than 77,000 hectares and forced the evacuation or confinement of over 100,000 people. Closer to Valencia, towns in L’Horta Sud and Camp de Turia are organising their own emergency plans. These include WhatsApp groups in English and other languages to coordinate evacuation information for international residents.

Heat, dust and a flood authority gone quiet
Smoke from the wildfires has combined with a blanket of Saharan dust, pushing particulate matter to dangerous levels. A pollution alert is in effect. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid outdoor exercise until air quality improves.
The heat is also reshaping the agricultural calendar. Farmers are increasingly working at night, both for their own safety and to stop water evaporating before it reaches the crops, Levante-EMV reports. Almond trees are proving especially vulnerable. The harvest of hardier fruit like oranges and lemons has been pushed back a month by late fruiting.
Meanwhile, Las Provincias reports that the Júcar River Basin Authority, which oversees flood emergency planning for the region, has not convened its governing board in nearly a year. The gap comes as dry, heat-cracked land raises the risk of flash flooding just as the DANA storm season approaches.

Pérez Galdós works pushed back to December
Drivers using the Pérez Galdós intersection, one of the city’s busiest routes, will have to wait longer than expected for the roadworks there to finish. Valencia has extended the project by three and a half months. Valencia Plaza reports the works are now due to be completed in December.

A budget deal on immigrant aid, and a new smoking law
The Valencian PP has reached a budget deal with Vox. It would exclude undocumented immigrants from social aid, except in cases of what the agreement calls “urgencia vital” — vital emergency — El Mundo reports. The agreement promises “national priority” for Spanish citizens in public services and pledges resources toward crimes committed by immigrants. Charities and social organisations have criticised the exclusion, and the opposition PSOE has called the policy “racist and xenophobic.”
A new anti-smoking law is also moving closer to approval. Valencia Extra reports the proposed rules would ban smoking on outdoor terraces, at swimming pools and on beaches. It would also fine parents whose children are caught smoking or vaping.

Crime watch: graffiti drops and a disguised heist
Graffiti advertising a Russian-language drug network has appeared across Valencia in recent days. Las Provincias reports investigators believe it directs buyers to secret drop-off points for cocaine and other drugs around the city.
In a case that reads like fiction, police say a jewelery store robber evaded identification for a time using prosthetic fingers and wigs. Five people have now been arrested in connection with the robberies, Levante-EMV reports.

Carnations, a king, and a shark named Ferran
Valencia is hoping the long-delayed Nou Mestalla stadium will be ready in time for World Cup 2030 matches, which Spain will co-host with Morocco and Portugal. Construction is progressing, but Las Provincias notes the city has yet to secure a confirmed spot on the tournament’s official host-city list.
The Alameda turned into a sea of colour this weekend for the Battle of the Flowers, with tens of thousands of carnations thrown in the summer tradition. Las Provincias has a photo essay of the event.
Looking ahead, the city is planning a bigger-than-usual commemoration this year of King Jaume I, the Christian king who founded the kingdom of Valencia after defeating the ruling Muslim taifa, celebrated every year on October 9th. And the Oceanogràfic has given one of its grey sharks a new name: Ferran Torres, after the World Cup goal-scorer.
