Bon dia! Summer arrives in earnest this week: the Gay Games open in Valencia with more than 10,000 participants, a heatwave is bringing near-30-degree nights to the coast, and Wednesday is a public holiday for the Feast of San Juan — with bonfires on the beach on Tuesday night. Shops and businesses will be closed on Wednesday. Read more about the festival on our site.
CITY & ENVIRONMENT
The first heatwave of summer arrives
Spain’s national weather agency AEMET has issued a yellow heat alert for the Valencian coast as the first heatwave of the season takes hold this week. Levante-EMV reports overnight temperatures close to 30 degrees along the shoreline — conditions the paper describes as “asphyxiating.” The alert is concentrated around Alicante and points south, though the heat will be felt across the region.

CITY & POLITICS
Valencia’s debt burden
Each resident of the Valencian Community carries roughly 12,000 euros of per capita debt attributable to chronic underfunding from the national government — equivalent, Las Provincias calculates, to the combined per capita debt of residents in Galicia, Asturias, and the Canary Islands. The regional financing system, which allocates central government funds to the comunidades, has left Valencia structurally short-changed for years.
There is a potential shift on the horizon. Spain’s new Finance Minister, Arcadi España, is Valencian — and from the socialist PSOE, the party currently in national government. But Valencia’s regional administration is run by the conservative PP under Juanfran Pérez-Llorca, and the political distance between the two has so far limited progress. The pair met in person last week, though Las Provincias reports that a new financing agreement remains a long way off.

NATO military police exercise outside Valencia
Levante-EMV reports exclusively on a large-scale NATO military police exercise currently under way in Bétera, just outside Valencia. Some 640 officers from 13 countries are taking part in drills that include explosives training and close-protection scenarios for heads of state. The exercises are part of a broader European effort to strengthen NATO capabilities.

CITY & SAFETY
A violent week — and motorcycle gangs on city avenues
Las Provincias this week brought together three serious crimes that unfolded separately over the past fortnight — including the discovery of a body in a household freezer — noting that while the cases are unrelated, their concentration in a short period is unusual for Valencia. All three investigations are ongoing.
On the city’s southern avenues, police are warning about the growing reach of motorcycle stunt gangs. Groups operating under names such as “La 46” and “The Little Horse Gang” have been staging illegal races and pyrotechnic-accompanied stunts on public roads, drawing crowds of onlookers. The gangs have developed enough of a following to run their own websites and clothing brands. Police say the events endanger both the riders and spectators.

CITY & CULTURE
The Gay Games come to Valencia
More than 10,200 participants from around the world are in Valencia this week for the Gay Games 2026, one of the largest LGBTQ+ sporting and cultural events on the calendar. The programme spans 39 disciplines — from ice skating to dragon boat racing — spread across venues around the city. Las Provincias has a full guide to events, venues, and how to attend.
Though divided from the games by politics, the Pride Parade on Saturday gave the week a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. Valencia Plaza publishing a photo essay from the march through the city centre.
