Valencia News | Summer Strikes & Beach Disruptions

Monday, 15 June 2026

Bon dia! It is shaping up to be a disruptive summer for getting around. In Valencia news this week, taxi drivers strike on Wednesday, Metrovalencia workers are planning walkouts from San Juan through to October, and the beaches are already without direct metro service until the end of August. Meanwhile, the teachers’ strike is on pause but negotiations continue — and Fallas 2027 already has a face.

City & Transport

A summer of strikes on the move

Three transport stories this week, all with practical implications for getting around the city. Taxi associations are staging a protest outside Les Corts on Wednesday 17 June from 9:20am to 2:30pm, objecting to legislation that allows ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Cabify to operate in Valencia. Expect road closures and diversions around the city centre that morning.

Metrovalencia workers announced a rolling strike from 22–26 June — covering the San Juan festival weekend, when the beaches are at their busiest. Further action is planned through July and into October. Valencia Extra has published the full list of affected days and timetables.

Separately, Metrovalencia has already suspended Lines 5 and 7 between Alameda and Maritim for renovation works until 30 August. The works were scheduled for summer when passenger numbers are lower. The result, however, is that beachgoers will need to find alternative transport for much of the season.

Teachers’ strike on pause — but not resolved

Negotiations continue as the teachers’ strike is currently suspended but no deal has been reached yet. President Pérez Llorca announced a package of measures aimed at sweetening the offer to unions: air conditioning for public school classrooms, improvements to school facilities, and a reduction in administrative workload for teachers. El País reports that the proposal to hire an additional 5,000 teachers — one of the unions’ core demands — has not yet been approved or costed.

On a related practical note, Valencia Extra reports that the start date for the 2026/2027 academic year has been officially confirmed as 9 September.

Jellyfish swarm stings 200 triathletes — and scientists are fighting back

A large jellyfish swarm in the waters off Tavernes de Valldigna caused serious disruption at a triathlon this weekend, stinging at least 200 competitors during the swim leg. Around 50 athletes withdrew after severe stings to the face and feet, unable to continue to the cycling and running stages. One veteran competitor told Las Provincias he had never seen anything like it — not even a wetsuit offered full protection.

The incident reflects a growing seasonal problem along the Mediterranean coast. Warming sea temperatures have expanded jellyfish populations in recent years. Researchers at the University of Alicante have developed an electromagnetic buoy designed to repel jellyfish — a project that may look increasingly timely as swarms appear earlier and in greater numbers.

Nino Bravo, a Simca 1000 and a cassette tape: Fallas 2027 has its centerpiece

Valencia has chosen its municipal falla for 2027: a giant effigy of Nino Bravo, the beloved Valencian singer of the 1960s and 70s, will dominate the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Complete with rose and cigarette in hand, the piece will be surrounded by nostalgic references to the era. Additional items will be cassette tapes and a Simca 1000 vintage car. The municipal falla is always the largest in the festival; previous editions have addressed themes ranging from peace to the climate crisis.

A second Gulliver Park is coming

Valencia Plaza reports that a second Gulliver Park is targeted to open in early 2027. Newly released images show an 8-metre-tall Gulliver that children will be able to climb and slide down — a sibling to the original, which has been one of the city’s most popular family landmarks for decades.

Why can Fallas be loud but Les Arts cannot?

Levante-EMV examines a question that has been circulating since noise restrictions curtailed the Festival de Les Arts: if outdoor concerts face strict sound limits, why do Fallas verbenas — often just as loud, and running later into the night — remain exempt? The paper doesn’t resolve the question, but the debate is likely to sharpen as the summer festival season gets underway.
