Valencia Downgrades Alert After Wednesday Night’s Flooding

The Ayuntamiento has downgraded to Yellow Alert for rain and flooding after Wednesday night’s torrential rain. Please keep monitoring official channels for any change in alert status.

Here’s a roundup what today’s local papers are reporting on the situation:

The alert, the rescues, and the questions it’s raising

Last night’s downpour triggered the ES-Alert system and Level 1 of the emergency flood plan. Some drivers were already trapped in flooded streets by the time the alert reached phones, and fire crews carried out dozens of rescues through the evening. The episode has revived fears of a repeat of the deadly 2024 DANA and reignited debate over how effectively authorities handle emergency warnings.

How much rain actually fell

A huge amount of rain fell in under an hour. AEMET reported 95 liters per square meter in Torrent, 71 of which fell in just 30 minutes. The downpour forced Valencia airport to close temporarily, diverting several flights, and flooded a number of Metrovalencia stations — the entire network was suspended for the night. Emergency services responded to flooded homes and drivers trapped in their cars.

Where the flooding hit hardest

Levante-EMV has video of flooding across several parts of the city, including the Poyo ravine and the Paiporta and Torrent areas hit hardest by the 2024 DANA. By this morning the Poyo had drained, but the L’Horteta ravine in Torrent was still carrying significant water.

A note on this weekend: With the alert still active and more possible rain in the forecast, we’re holding our usual Weekend Highlights until Friday morning, once we know which outdoor events and activities are actually going ahead. Look out for it then.
