Festival of San Antonio Abad

Every January, Valencians honor San Antonio Abad, the patron saint of animals, with a unique and heartwarming tradition. For over 200 years, animals and their owners have lined up to receive a special blessing from the Brotherhood of San Antonio Abad.

The festivities begin on the evening of January 16, with the ceremonial lighting of the Sant Antoni bonfire at Calle Sagunto. The main event takes place the following day, January 17, starting with a morning mass. At 10:30 a.m., the blessing of animals begins, creating a delightful spectacle as domestic pets, draft horses, police dogs, and other working animals parade through the line.

Los Reyes Magos – Three Kings Day in Valencia

Christmas in Valencia wouldn’t be complete without the magical arrival of the Three Kings or Three Wise Men on January 5. The next day, January 6, marks the main day for exchanging gifts in Spain, making it a highly anticipated celebration, especially for children.

In Valencia, the festivities begin with a reenactment of the Three Kings’ journey to visit the baby Jesus. True to local tradition, the Kings arrive dramatically by boat at the Marina, followed by a grand parade through the city center. The parade features elaborate floats, a vibrant atmosphere, and plenty of candy tossed to delighted children along the route.

At Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Kings pause at the nativity scene before entering the Ayuntamiento building, where they meet with children. This year, in a heartwarming gesture, the Three Kings will also visit children in flood-affected areas on the morning of January 6, spreading joy to those who need it most.
