Valencia News: Thursday, 16 January 2025

Bon dia ? Here is your roundup of news this Thursday. As usual, a post on weekend events will be out later in the day. Stay tuned!

More Extreme Weather Coming

Valencia is currently experiencing a cold spell, with night temperatures hovering just above freezing. However, a new DANA storm (cold drop) is forecasted to bring milder temperatures along with rain. According to Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET, the storm may also bring localized flooding and snow in higher elevations. A Punt has more details.

For a broader perspective on how climate change is driving extreme weather across the Mediterranean, The New York Times offers an in-depth feature.

Preparing for Future Floods

Geographers warn that Valencia’s infrastructure is not equipped to handle the increasing frequency of extreme weather events caused by climate change. In a recent commission hearing, experts highlighted the vulnerability of drainage systems on major roads and the urgent need for public education on flood evacuation. Additionally, the flash floods in October caused extensive damage, including the devastation of nearly 250 kilometers of coastline.

Surge in Respiratory Infections

Valencia is grappling with a sharp rise in flu and respiratory infections, with hospitals reporting long waiting times. The Valencia region has recorded more than double the national average of respiratory cases, according to À Punt. Read the full report on respiratory infections in Valencia.

Housing Shortage

Political debates over Spain’s housing crisis intensified this week, with parties on both the left and right presenting contrasting solutions. Valencia Plaza offers a comparative analysis of the two proposals

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has proposed a 100% property tax on real estate owned by non-residents and non-EU citizens. The proposal has sparked concern among prospective investors, particularly in the UK, the BBC reports.

    Valencia: Top City for Retirees

Despite ongoing challenges, Valencia has been named the best city in the world for retirees by Forbes. Factors like its sunny climate, affordable living costs, and high quality of life have placed the city at the top of the list.

That’s all for this week. Check back for weekend events shortly.
