Flood rebuild at 23% — as a new early-warning system aims to buy residents time
Almost two years after the October 2024 DANA disaster, the Valencian government has completed just 23% of the repairs and reconstruction works it committed to, according to Valencia Plaza. The answer, in at least one case, is no. The municipality of Chiva is demanding an immediate review of the Puente del Gallego — a bridge that cost €2.4 million to repair after the 2024 floods — after it flooded again in recent rains. Against that backdrop, the Consell is rolling out a new early-warning system designed to flag potential flooding up to 16 days in advance. The push follows criticism that the emergency alert sent during the October 2024 floods came too late — a delay widely seen as a factor in the disaster, which killed more than 200 people. Whether earlier forecasting can compensate for still-unfinished infrastructure remains an open question.

Doctors still on holiday, an app that never launched, and €8m lost

A more costly failure: Levante-EMV has revealed that Valencia’s Ayuntamiento lost as much as €8 million paying for a public transport management app that never launched. The city contracted the software to manage its transport network but the project collapsed before going live. No further details on accountability or legal action were available at the time of reporting.

Two Mexican chefs crowned world paella champions — in Valencia’s own back yard
Two chefs from Burguetto, in Apizaco, Mexico, took first place at this weekend’s International Paella Competition in Sueca, ABC reports, beating out dozens of international competitors in the rice-growing heart of the region. Marto’s Rice, a restaurant from San Antonio, Texas, picked up a special mention. Locals and visitors alike will get a chance to taste award-winning paella at World Paella Day on September 20 at the Marina.
