Bon dia! AEMET has issued a red alert for Valencia today, with temperatures expected to exceed 42°C near Xàtiva — the peak of what has been a deadly summer so far. The heat is driving a surge of political and practical esponses across the region, while Spain’s national politics continue to convulse around immigration and a deepening corruption crisis around the Sánchez government.

42°C forecast as Valencia hits peak heat — and where to find shelter

AEMET has issued its highest level warning — a red alert — for Valencia today, with temperatures near Xàtiva and the southern coast expected to exceed 42°C. The agency describes conditions around Carcaixent as “extraordinary danger.” Temperatures will continue to climb through Thursday before easing, according to AEMET.

The heat is also driving fire risk across the wider region. A large blaze near Soneja in Castellón forced the evacuation of 500 residents from the nearby town of Azuébar, with ten aerial units and UME military emergency teams deployed to bring it under control.

Municipalities across the Comunitat are responding with a range of measures — air-conditioned public refuges, additional shaded areas, temporary water stations, and cooling spaces for vulnerable residents. Some of this infrastructure has been funded through DANA disaster recovery money repurposed for extreme heat. Valencia Extra has published a complete map of climate shelters across the city, with addresses and opening hours.

Over a million immigrants apply to regularise — and Valencia’s government challenges the scheme in court

More than 1.2 million undocumented immigrants across Spain have applied to regularise their status under the government’s amnesty programme, with 167,000 — about 14% of the national total — from the Valencian Community. Valencia Plaza has broken down the data: 67% of applicants are from Central and South America, with Colombians accounting for 26% of applications. Morocco (13.4%), Venezuela (11.7%), and Peru (8.8%) are the next largest groups. Some 81% of applicants are under 45.

The programme is simultaneously under legal challenge. Spain’s Supreme Court is reviewing its constitutional basis following a complaint filed by the Valencian and Aragonese regional governments — both governed by the PP. At least 600,000 applications have already been accepted, but the outcome of the legal review could affect those still pending, with the application deadline approaching.

The dispute has also taken on an electoral dimension nationally. PP leader Alberto Feijóo accused Prime Minister Sánchez last week of engineering the voter rolls through Spain’s Grandchildren’s Law, which grants Spanish nationality to descendants of Spanish citizens abroad. El País reports that Feijóo described it as fabricating new voters, though the law predates the current government.

Spain’s corruption crisis deepens around Sánchez

A Spanish judge has opened an investigation into the head of the Guardia Civil over allegations that she obstructed corruption and influence-peddling probes linked to members of the governing PSOE. The New York Times has published a summary of the case and why it is adding to already intense pressure on Prime Minister Sánchez, with opposition parties again calling for early elections.

A food hall closes — and an American finds her city

Mercado de la Imprenta, the food hall that opened in one of Valencia’s finest historic buildings less than three years ago, has apparently shut its doors. Las Provincias reports that despite a high-profile launch, it never managed to sustain the footfall needed to make the concept work.

On a warmer note: Valencia Plaza has profiled American Sarah Kate Redding, who built a tour guide business in Valencia and in doing so made the city her home. The piece is part of a growing body of local coverage recognising the city’s expanding international community.

The pigeon problem gets a plan

Valencia has launched a plan to bring its pigeon population under control, according to Las Provincias. The city will deploy environmentally friendly dovecotes and introduce sterilising feed as part of a package of measures targeting a population that has grown by 60% since 2021 — now estimated at nearly 12 pigeons per hectare. The programme joins a growing list of urban wildlife management initiatives in the city, which last year allocated €92,000 to tackling rats in the sewer network.
