Festival of San Antonio Abad

Every January, Valencians honor San Antonio Abad — affectionately known in Valencian as Sant Antoni del Porquet — the patron saint of animals. The celebration centers on the blessing of animals, a ritual that has taken place in the city for hundreds of years and is organized by the Brotherhood of San Antonio Abad.

This year, the festivities begin on January 8 with the opening of the Mercat del Porrat on Calle Sagunto. Alongside the market stalls, families will find children’s workshops focused on animal care and responsible pet ownership. If you’re considering adopting a pet, this is also a good place to explore: several animal charities will be present to help match animals with potential owners.

The main event takes place on January 17, starting with a morning mass. At 11:00 a.m., the blessing of animals begins. It’s a lively scene as household pets, draft horses, police dogs, and other working animals patiently line up for their turn. It’s a popular event, so arrive early for a good view.
