What’s On This Weekend: Art Auction, Fireworks and Festivals

Buen Finde! February is picking up speed in Valencia — carnival energy in Ruzafa, Lunar New Year activities, and the lead-up to Fallas. Here’s what’s on this weekend and what’s coming up soon.

Last call!
We’re almost full, but we still have a few spots left this Friday, February 6 for Pont de Valencia’s silent art auction with Local Air Studio at Flying Bean Coffee, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Entry is by donation (suggested minimum €30 per person) and includes a glass of cava, tapas, and time to meet the artists. Your donation supports Pont de Valencia, and 100% of artwork sales go directly to the artists. Space is limited, so please register in advance.

Festivals

Top pick: Fireworks at El Micalet, Plaza de la Reina
Valencia celebrates the birthday of El Micalet, the city’s iconic bell tower, with a free performance by the Valencia Symphony of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, accompanied by a major pyrotechnic show in the historic centre.

Theatre, Film & Dance

Theatre picks
For those wanting to practise their Spanish with familiar works: Agatha Christie’s La ratonera (The Mousetrap) is on at Teatre Talia, while Sala Russafa stages an adaptation of Las amistades peligrosas (Dangerous Liaisons).

For film buffs
La Filmoteca continues its Billy Wilder retrospective and begins a new Martin Scorsese cycle, starting with The Age of Innocence. It also hosts a special screening of the influential documentary Harlan County, USA on Thursday.

And for dance aficionados
Teatro Círculo presents Silver, a contemporary piece exploring the commodification of what makes us human. Sala Carme hosts Danza Down, from the award-winning company of Elías Lafuente, featuring West Side Story–inspired choreography performed by learning-disabled dancers.

Art

Several new exhibitions have just opened. Alba Cabrera Gallery presents a new show by abstract expressionist Eusebio López, while Luis Adelantado Gallery features two contrasting contemporary exhibitions: botanical-inspired works by French duo Alexandre Lamarche and Florentine Ovize, and video-game-influenced art by Ana Este Reig.

IVAM hosts an extended visit to Kara Walker: Burning Village with Esther García Ejome, from the perspective of Black Studies in Valencia (Spanish).

Bombas Gens opens Universes of Light, a limited-time immersive light art exhibition.

Live Music

La Batisfera in Cabanyal continues to expand its international programme, with Greek, Brazilian, and Jamaican artists in the weeks ahead. La Vitti showcases the electronic-driven compositions of Samuel Keri on Saturday, and the Concerts de la Pèrgola outdoor series continues.

For jazz fans, Burning House offers daily options this weekend, from flamenco-jazz to groove. Looking for a jam session? Loom in Ruzafa hosts one every Sunday evening.

Classical music lovers are spoiled for choice, from Sir Mark Elder conducting at Les Arts to Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony with harp and orchestra at the Palau de la Música. There are also excellent free concerts: tango at the Centre del Carme on Thursday, and a soprano-and-piano concert by Harmonia del Parnàs at MuVIM on Sunday.
